It is what?
Inflammation of the bronchi and trachea is a common, infectious, and normally self-limiting respiratory condition known as kennel cough. Kennel cough is brought on by a wide variety of viruses and bacteria that are present in public areas where other dogs congregate and can be either viral or bacterial in origin. By breathing in bacteria or virus particles into their respiratory tracts, dogs contract kennel cough. Kennel Cough is spread through airborne droplets, direct touch, or contaminated surfaces, much like a cold in people. It is easily contracted through exposure at doggie daycare centers, dog sports events, veterinarian offices, any public areas where dogs congregate, such parks, or pretty much anyplace your dog comes into contact with another dog, whether directly or indirectly.
symptoms of the illness
A hacking or honking cough that almost sounds like the dog is choking is one of the symptoms that commonly appear two to six days after exposure. Other symptoms include nasal or ocular discharge. Additionally, a fever and appetite loss may be present. Excitation, play, drinking, eating, or exerting pressure to the throat can all cause coughing. The duration of symptoms can range from a few days to many weeks.
Prevention
Kennel cough is a disease that can affect any dog. Although there is a vaccination available for the most prevalent kennel cough virus, the bordetella virus, other kennel cough virus strains may not be protected against by the vaccine, so your dog may still develop the condition. The best method to minimize (but not completely eradicate) your dog's exposure is to keep him as far away from public areas where other dogs congregate.
Treatment
A veterinarian visit should be part of the course of treatment so that the doctor can examine the animal and evaluate whether or not antibiotics and cough suppressants are required, as they are not always appropriate. Avoid using a neck collar while walking the dog during symptoms as this might increase pressure on the trachea, causing the cough and aggravating the inflammation. To assist clear the nose and open breathing pathways, using a vaporizer or locking the dog in the bathroom while taking a steam shower is helpful. Additionally, various herbal treatments can be used to help the dog get through the symptoms. Even after receiving treatment for kennel cough, a dog may still become ill in the future.
